Stop Being Too Embarassed to go to the Gym

Hey you, beautiful girl with a few extra pounds. You're just starting to get interested in fitness eh? Yeah- me too.

Does the idea of going to a gym terrify you? Yeah, me too. But it shouldn't. Gathering up the courage to go to the gym is a big deal. If you have social anxiety because of your weight like I do, it can take everything you have just to make the decision to leave the house.

I have felt the anxiety of having to walk past everyone to get to the changing room. We've all seen memes and other posts on social media making fun of fat people at the gym, and being the "fat person" at the gym is scary. I'm sure most of you have also seen the famous body shaming photo some model posted of an overweight woman showering at the gym- yes she took a photo of someone naked in the shower. Disgusting and terrifying.

The reality is, that most people will be happy to see you there improving yourself, or will be too focused on their own workout to even notice you. If someone happens to say something rude or looks at you like you shouldn't be there, just remember that it has nothing to do with you. People who shame others for how they look are just projecting insecurities of their own.

Here are some tips that might make going to the gym a bit easier:

1- Remember that you deserve to be there just as much as everyone else. You're a paying customer just like they are, and no one at the gym is better than you. More experienced at using the equipment maybe, but we're all equal human beings. There is nothing embarrassing about wanting to better yourself. We ALL have to start somewhere.

2- Make it fun! Buy a fun gym bag, bright sneakers and comfy cute clothes. I did this recently and it actually motivates me to work out. I may not be able to fit into Lululemon, but my accessories are super cute (and functional)!

3- Make a playlist! I personally use Apple Music  and there are a ton of workout playlists to choose from. I also make my own with my favourite music, and it really helps me push through a workout.

4- Try out different gyms. Most gyms will allow you a day pass to test out their facility. I personally need to feel comfortable there and get good vibes from the staff in order to want to keep going. Being comfortable at your gym will also make it easier to ask for help if you aren't sure how to use something.

5- Bring a friend. There is strength in numbers. If you have anxiety, having someone you know there will help you be at ease. Having a gym buddy will also help keep you accountable.

There are lots of workouts you can do at home or outside too, but if you want to use a gym, don't let fear stop you. Remember, you are worthy of being there, you deserve the same opportunities as everyone else to be healthy, and you can do this!

Comment below and let me know if you use a gym, have any fears about using the gym, or have tips for others who want to start going.
